Merton College are seeking two Pastoral Tutors!

This is an exciting new role aimed at improving the learner experience and improving the positive progression of all learners.

As a Pastoral Tutor, you will track and monitor the progress of a specific amount of our Further Education learners. This will include conducting 1:1 meetings with learners, delivering College group tutorial programmes, liaising with members of staff and parents/guardians regarding learner progress and signposting learners to wider support as and when needed. You will also be a part of the College Safeguarding team which will include supporting a caseload of students.

We’d like our Pastoral Tutors to have experience of delivering student workshops or tutorials to a diverse range of students and of supporting student progress on a 1:1 basis. We’d like you to have some experience of youth and community work and have a clear understanding of the needs of students and how these may be met.

You’ll be an excellent communicator with good interpersonal skills. You’ll be able to develop and maintain positive working relationships with people and work well as part of a high performing team. A Level 3 qualification in Youth & Community, Education, Psychology, Sociology or Health & Social Care would put you at an advantage, but it’s important to know that this is by no means essential. Experience of careers advice and guidance is also desirable.

The Counselling and Wellbeing Advisor plays a key role in supporting and promoting student mental health through individual and group counselling, workshops and drop-in services. Collaborating with the Colleges support services, you will ensure a holistic approach to wellbeing. Responsibilities include maintaining confidential records, adhering to safeguarding policies and continuous professional development.

You will hold a minimum Level 4 Diploma or foundation degree in Counselling, supported by evidence of CPD, demonstrating the knowledge and skills required to work safely and ethically with children and young people, or alternatively a Level 5 Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People (CYP). You will have a minimum of 200 hours of counselling practice, including at least 50 hours of experience working with children and young people aged 4–18 where your core training is adult-focused.

You will be a registered member of a recognised professional body such as the BACP, UKCP, or NCPS, and have experience of delivering both individual and group counselling sessions. You will have worked with clients presenting with complex and multiple issues, including mental health difficulties, and be able to demonstrate experience of working with young people in educational settings or other relevant environments such as CAMHS or NHS services.

You will be trained in psychotherapeutic approaches appropriate for short-term, collaborative counselling and have experience of undertaking risk assessments and crisis interventions for clients experiencing complex mental health needs. You will also be confident in assessing client suitability for counselling services and making appropriate referrals to GPs and external agencies where required. A strong understanding of safeguarding procedures is essential, along with the ability to manage a counselling caseload effectively, balancing clinical sessions with administrative responsibilities. You will be able to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills when engaging with students, parents, and staff.

The current Counselling programmes at Kingston College sit within the Wellbeing Section as part of the Commercial Industries and Access School. This includes a BA (Hons) Integrative Relational Counselling degree, a Mental Health degree and study programme, as well as part-time adult courses at Levels 2 and 3, and a Level 4 Diploma. Our introductory courses are currently accredited by NCFE (Level 3) and CPCAB (Level 2). The Counselling degree programme holds prestigious BACP accreditation and is validated by Middlesex University.

We’re now seeking a Sessional Lecturer in Counselling to teach on the Level 4 adult part-time daytime courses (Tuesdays and/or Thursdays), with the potential to contribute to other Counselling programmes.

Our ideal candidate will hold a professional qualification in Integrative Relational Counselling or Psychotherapy (minimum Level 6 Diploma or Honours degree). You’ll be a registered member of BACP, UKCP or an equivalent UK professional body, with at least three years’ post-qualification experience and accreditation (or a willingness to work towards this).

You’ll have recent experience of teaching Counselling at Level 3 or above and be confident in assessing both written work and practical skills. The Director of Curriculum and High Needs holds cross‑Group responsibility for developing and leading the Group’s Inclusive Learning strategy and for ensuring high‑quality opportunities for students with learning difficulties and disabilities (LDD). As a member of the Group Leadership Team, the postholder shares collective accountability for delivering the College Vision, Strategic Plan, Objectives and Annual Operating Plan.

The role requires leading the Group’s Inclusive Learning strategy, driving effective curriculum development and fostering strong partnerships with local and regional stakeholders. The Director will ensure that target income and contribution levels are met for High Needs Students (HNS), Additional Learning Support (ALS) and all curriculum areas within their remit. You will build capacity and capability across the Group to deliver consistently high-quality provision for learners with LDD, utilising a range of delivery models.

Working closely with internal and external stakeholders, you will develop curriculum pathways that meet community needs and support learners with LDD to achieve success and progress into employment, further education or training. A strong commitment to exemplary safeguarding practices is essential, ensuring that all students with LDD are protected and supported at all times.

The role demands excellent knowledge of curriculum and pedagogy for students with learning difficulties and disabilities within the FE sector, alongside a thorough understanding of funding and learning support provisions for students with additional needs. You should have a strong track record of leadership in an FE setting, including evidence of effective management of a significant budget.

We are looking for someone with a proven record of growing and developing provision for students with learning difficulties and disabilities, as well as a successful and sustained history of implementing systems and processes that have raised quality and standards in learning and teaching. You will have demonstrated the successful management of change within an organisation and have experience working collaboratively with partners, including employers and external agencies, to develop the College Curriculum and achieve income targets.

You will ideally hold a teaching qualification, a Level 3 safeguarding qualification and either possess, or be willing to work towards, a management qualification. Training as an Ofsted Inspector or QAA Reviewer is also advantageous.
